Parents as Partners

Parents as Partners

At DFS we request all parents to come forward and collaborate with us. Working with parents is vital for children’s learning and development, DFS prides itself on the concerted approach between parents and teachers towards children progress.

Every child will be supervised by our experienced & caring teachers known to the parent and child, they will have knowledge and understanding on how children learn and develop and will have the unique understanding of what your child’s currents interests and needs are.

The relationship between the teacher, child and parent will begin on day one of your child attending the school. In order to build an emotional bond between your child and the First Step staff it is important your child recognizes your acceptance & confidence on school and school staff which will lead your child into having secure confidence with their relationship with the teachers and staff.

We at DFS acknowledge that the parent is the child’s first educator, it is the parent who will know their child best and we will work in close partnership with parent to ensure that we have all the information needed to settle and build upon your child’s learning and development. The school teachers & staff will effectively share information with parents in order for your child’s needs to be understood and therefore met.

A child’s day at DFS School is a memorable journey not just for them but for parents too. The center manager & school teachers will capture all of your child’s learning. Information about your child’s learning will be shared with you informally and formally when you drop off or pick your child from school. Engaging in a conversation with your center manager or center head can produce useful information about new interests or experiences that can be used to plan development related learning opportunities inside school and further design creative activity ideas that can be shared with parents to do at home.

We realize at DFS how busy parents are and it may not be possible for them to engage in a daily conversation with school teachers but at DFS there are different ways of communication such as diaries, newsletters, texts and emails to support a regular information updates. Teacher Parents connect & meetings take place regularly and provide opportunities for center head & teachers to share observations, assessments and planning with parents and to be able to listen and respond to any thoughts or questions parents may have.

At every DFS centers we have a Parent Partnership, where we encourage good communication between parents and the school. For example discussing changes to policies and ways in which our service to parents and children can be enhanced. DFS centers will also hold social gatherings throughout the year, these are also good ways to build strong and happy relationships between the parents and the school staff through having fun.

Parents in Class

At DFS, we acknowledge and appreciate that parents come with unique flair and virtuosity that can be beneficial to children’s learning in and out of the classroom. Hence, we create opportunities for parents to be a part of us in the classroom, inviting them to have hands on experience in the various ways that children learn, explore the world, and express themselves.

Through activities from simple story telling, to puppetry sessions, cooking demonstrations, show-and-tells or even just a playhouse project; these are but some ways that parents in class contribute a different perspective, voice and experience for the children.

From the eyes of the children, seeing their parents involved in their classroom fills them with pride and appreciation for learning and the world. That is the ideal situation for learning, growing and bonding culture we practice in DFS.

Parents Involvement

Parents are important members of Discover First Step Pre-School & Day Care, and DFS communicates and shares information in various ways so that parents can participate in their child’s educational transformation and have a clear understanding of the School procedures, programs, and policies. Events like Parents Orientation and Event Celebrations help families to get to know the School better as their children join us.

Parents Teacher Meet or Parents counselling workshops give parents additional opportunities to learn about the School and the specifics of what their child is learning and experiencing daily. DFS teachers, Center Head, Center Manager in the school meet with parents to discuss their child’s progress and school experience during scheduled meetings. The school host high tea and roundtable discussions for parents to discuss important topics of interest relating to child progress.

We communicate to parents about all the trips, events, and programs. Instructor led meetings allow parents to ask sports-related queries, and center head connect provides parents an opportunity to talk about issues associated with leaving preschool and going to Formal Schools.

Parent education also includes parent workshops highlighting the progress record of children in each class. Workshops and parent seminars at the DFS include topics on positive parenting, nutrition, friendships and health education.

Apart from scheduled meetings & events, parents have multiple opportunities to volunteer for School, helping with promotional activities. Parents are also very much involved with School extracurricular programs, including Sports Day and Annual Day. Parents can also volunteer for the Admissions and Account Office.

In addition to the ‘in-person’ events and activities, DFS provides a variety of other ways for parents to stay informed and updated, including this website, the Parents Handbook, and monthly, weekly, daily updates.

Is my Child Ready

In this highly competitive world, it is never too early to boost your child’s education. Nowadays, it is common to see toddlers being enrolled in pre-schools even before they can understand the alphabet. Don’t be surprised if you see parents enrolling their children to good preschools even before the child is born. Yes, it is quite a race out there, as parents rush to get their child in the best of pre-schools.

Readiness for preschool has more to do with where your child is developmentally. Is the child socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively ready to participate in a daily, structured, educational program with a group of other children?

There isn’t a checklist of must-have skills kids need to start preschool. That’s because young children develop at very different rates.

Determining when your children are ready for preschool is easy to do if you know what signs to look for. Some of these signs at times are very easy to see, but some of these are a bit more hidden.

But there are some areas you can look at to see if your child is ready for group learning.

  • Has the child spent time away from you?
  • Is your child fairly independent?
  • Can child work on tasks on his own?
  • Is the child ready to participate in group activities and play with other kids?
  • Is he/she used to keeping a regular schedule?
  • Does he/she have the physical stamina for preschool?
  • Does is/she Follow Directions?
  • Can You Understand what he/she Is Saying?
  • How Well Does She/he Transition?
  • How Well Does He/she Interact with Other Kids?
  • Why do you want to send your child to preschool?

We accept children into our preschool program from 18 month onwards.

Discover First Step does not require your child be potty-trained before admitted to school. For students in the full day program, we have a daily nap time (or quiet time for the older children) where our little learners can rest and restore their energy for the second half of the day.

We are used to welcoming bilingual, trilingual and even non-English speaking children, and helping them develop their communication skills in English. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for when children are ready for pre-school, but we are always happy to advise you on how to help your little one adapt to a school setting. For example, we suggest especially for our students coming to us without prior experience of being in a group setting that we do an introduction and adaptation period for the child to ensure their comfort.

Above all, our warm and encouraging atmosphere offers a positive first school experience for our students – and their families!
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any concerns.
