Thank you for your interest in enrollment at Discover First Step Pre-School & Day Care for Children. We accept applications to our programs from age 9 months onwards. We welcome applications for all grade levels, from Play Group through Grade 2.
Applying At DFS
Our birthdate cut-off is March 31st. This means that your child must be the age of the age group/grade that he/she is entering in April. For example, if you are applying for Nursery program, your child must be 3 years old by April 1 of the year he/she enters school.
Our admissions team is available to walk you and your family through the necessary steps. All prospective students follow a similar application process, with age-appropriate variations. For example, younger applicants are asked to participate in a playdate/interview, while Upper School prospects are assessed for their academic skills.
If you are interested in submitting an application for the current school year, please contact the admissions office directly or email at info@firststepedu.net.
Note to Kindergarten Applicants
Should we reach our capacity for Kindergarten interview appointments before the application deadline, additional Kindergarten applications will be placed in a wait pool on “active hold”. Any applicant family placed in the wait pool will be notified. If interview appointments become available, we will contact families in accordance with our school’s mission and enrollment goals.
How to Apply
Families who are interested in applying to Discover First Step Pre-School & Day Care should begin the process by submitting the enquiry form.
Parent Visit
Tour our beautiful school and get a chance to see our incredible facilities. Our tours take place while school is in session. They are an opportunity to look closely. We enter classrooms to observe conversations, to see the documentation on the walls, to watch the way students treat one another and to hear the voices in which teachers speak to children and in which students speak to each other. The connections between people are palpable.
This will be the time for you to explore our preschool and ask questions. We encourage both parents to be involved in the admissions process and take this time to become familiar with our school, our belief and education style.
- Experience first-hand what takes place inside First Step classroom.
- Visit classrooms in the Lower School (Nursery–Kindergarten) and Middle School (Grades 1–2).
- Tour the school while your child is in the play visit.
- If your child attends an early childhood program, please have the Confidential School Report and Transfer Certificate.
Child Visit
Your child’s one-hour visit will be during a weekday in a group of four to six applicant children. Visits are play-based. Children engage in a variety of activities, some at their own initiative and others at the interviewer’s request.
- Exploration/play with materials in the room
- Puzzles
- Drawing
- Listening to a story

Parents will meet with a member of our Admission team on the same day as their child’s playgroup interview/assessment shall be in progress.
- We encourage both parents (if applicable) to come to the interview.
- At the interview, we will get to know your family, discuss what you are looking for in a school, and answer any questions you may have about the admissions process.
Formal admissions testing is not required for applicants applying for Grades Play Group through Grade 2. Admissions team will share the performance current status report prepared on the basis of child involvement in classroom activities during school visit.
